WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA — Tensions have escalated in Namibia following a controversial meeting between European Union (EU) envoys and Panduleni Itula, the leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), an opposition party. The meeting, which took place last Tuesday at the residence of the German ambassador Thorsten Hutter in Windhoek, has drawn sharp criticism from the Namibian government and members of the ruling Swapo party.
Vice-President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah voiced concerns, describing the diplomats' actions as "highly questionable diplomacy" and hinting at potential interference with Namibia’s upcoming elections. These remarks reflect the government's unease with the international engagement with opposition figures, especially as the country approaches critical national polls.
In response to the meeting, the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) issued a statement last Sunday demanding the expulsion of the diplomats involved, specifically naming representatives from Germany, Finland, France, Spain, and Portugal. The youth wing of the ruling party has called on Namibian authorities to declare these foreign missions' representatives as persona non grata, asserting that they should not interfere in Namibia's internal affairs.
However, the EU mission in Namibia has countered these allegations, stating that the meeting was merely an "informal lunch" that provided a platform to discuss general issues within Namibia, including Itula's election campaign. The mission clarified that no state matters were discussed nor any actions taken that could influence the electoral process in November.
The incident has underscored the delicate balance between diplomatic relations and national sovereignty, stirring a debate on the acceptable limits of diplomatic interactions in the context of national politics. The situation remains fluid, with potential diplomatic repercussions depending on how both the Namibian authorities and the EU respond to the unfolding controversy.
