In a significant demonstration of friendship and religious solidarity, Morocco has inaugurated Ivory Coast’s largest mosque, marking the completion of a seven-year construction project in Abidjan. The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries from both countries, reflecting the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
Mabri Toikeuss, a participant at the mosque's opening and Friday prayers, expressed his appreciation for the Moroccan monarch's contribution. "This mosque is an important work of His Majesty the King of Morocco. It symbolizes an act of generosity, faith, and deep love for Ivory Coast and its people," he stated.
Morocco and Ivory Coast have shared strong bilateral relations for over six decades, with King Mohammed VI actively seeking to enhance Morocco's influence in West Africa. The King has made several visits to Ivory Coast, part of his broader strategy to foster closer ties across the region.
The relationship between King Mohammed VI and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara is notably close, highlighted recently when the Moroccan king congratulated President Ouattara on Ivory Coast's victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in February.
During the mosque's inauguration, Morocco’s ambassador to Ivory Coast highlighted the historical connection between the two countries. "Our relations date back 60 years and continue to strengthen across various sectors," he remarked. Morocco's investment in Francophone West Africa, especially in stable countries like Ivory Coast, contrasts sharply with the political instability experienced by other former French colonies in the region, such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea.
The new mosque not only serves as a place of worship but also as a symbol of the harmonious relationship between Morocco and Ivory Coast. It stands as a testament to the mutual respect and cooperation that has been cultivated over the years and signals a continuing commitment to these ideals in the future.
