Johannesburg, South Africa – Former President Jacob Zuma will honor a summons to appear before the disciplinary panel of the African National Congress (ANC), according to his new party, Umkhonto weSizwe (MK).
The ANC, which Zuma previously led as president from 2009 to 2018, issued the notice following his public endorsement of MK, a rival party, in the upcoming general elections.
This decision marks a significant development in South African politics, as Zuma was suspended from the ANC in January after declaring his support for MK, where he has since become a prominent leader and campaign figure.
The disciplinary hearing, scheduled for next Tuesday, will address Zuma’s actions, specifically his public endorsement of another party and his registration as a candidate under MK for the forthcoming elections.
Nhlamulo Ndhlela, spokesperson for the MK party, affirmed Zuma’s commitment to facing the panel, stating on the EyeWitness news website that "Mr. Zuma is not a coward and will attend his disciplinary hearing." This statement highlights the former president’s readiness to engage with the disciplinary processes of the ANC despite his current affiliations.
Despite stepping down from the presidency under a cloud of allegations and controversies, Zuma continues to wield significant influence in South African politics, often capturing major media attention.
His involvement with MK and the subsequent disciplinary proceedings reflect ongoing shifts in the political landscape of South Africa, where former leaders maintain active roles in shaping the country’s future.
