Rabat, Morocco — Moroccan officials are setting ambitious goals to transform the nation into a leading aviation hub by attracting major aerospace manufacturers.
The strategy involves capitalizing on Morocco's labor market, which offers a blend of availability and affordability that is appealing to international businesses looking to diversify their supply chains.
Morocco's $2 billion-a-year aerospace industry is at the forefront of the country's economic transformation plans, moving away from its traditional agrarian base.
This shift includes substantial investments in the aerospace sector, where Morocco is subsidizing manufacturers not only in aviation but also in the production of trains and automobiles. The aim is to enhance the industrial sector's contribution to the national economy and foster job creation.
The country is strategically positioning itself against other global players, from Mexico to Thailand, vying for contracts with aerospace giants such as Boeing and Airbus.
These companies are increasingly outsourcing various aspects of their operations, including design, production, and maintenance, to meet rising demand and expedite the delivery of new aircraft.
Hamid Abbou, CEO of the state-owned Royal Air Maroc, emphasized Morocco's advantageous position in the competitive industry. "The needs are huge and we are in a very good position," Abbou stated.
He noted that unlike many European suppliers, Morocco does not face challenges in recruiting talent for the aerospace industry, which adds to its appeal as an investment destination.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance the capabilities of Moroccan airlines and expand their operations, aligning with the national strategy to boost the overall economic profile of the country.
As Morocco continues to build and expand its aerospace infrastructure, it aims not only to attract foreign investment but also to become a central player in the global aviation industry
