Bamako, Mali — Reports have emerged from Mali that at least 100 civilians were kidnapped last week by suspected jihadists in the Mopti region.
According to local sources who spoke to the AFP news agency, the civilians were traveling in three buses when attackers intercepted them and forced them to head towards a forest between Bandiagara and Bankass.
Six days after the incident, there remains no trace of the hostages, escalating concerns about their safety.
The Mopti region, particularly the area between Bandiagara and Bankass, is known for frequent attacks by Islamist fighters, exacerbating the security challenges in central Mali.
The ongoing insecurity has sparked considerable frustration among the local population.
In response to the recent surge in violence, civil society organizations in Bandiagara have staged protests demanding more robust protection for local communities. They are calling for the establishment of a military camp to deter attacks and safeguard civilians.
The security situation in Mali has been particularly precarious following the military coup in 2021, which led to the withdrawal of thousands of international troops.
The reduction in foreign military support has left the country vulnerable to jihadist groups that have been active in northern Mali for over a decade and have gradually expanded their operations to the central regions and even into neighboring countries like Burkina Faso and Niger.
The rise in jihadist activities in these regions has also contributed to political instability, prompting military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
The international community remains concerned about the escalating violence and the growing humanitarian crises in the Sahel region, as local and international efforts to restore peace continue to face significant challenges.
