Nsukka, Nigeria — The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has suspended a lecturer following serious allegations of sexual harassment against a female student.
The action was taken after a compromising video involving the lecturer went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
The video shows a man, wearing only shorts, attempting to conceal his identity as he is confronted in what appears to be a university office.
Voices in the video can be heard discussing the ongoing case, mentioning evidence such as voice notes and emphasizing the victim's marital status, highlighting that she is "someone's wife."
In response to the incident, UNN has acted swiftly by suspending the lecturer, pending a thorough investigation by a disciplinary panel set up to probe the matter. The university has yet to hear from the accused lecturer regarding the accusations.
The University of Nigeria reinforced its stance on sexual misconduct with a strong statement: "For the record, the University of Nigeria has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct involving our staff and students,” the statement declared.
It further emphasized the institution's commitment to safeguarding students from abuse and exploitation, underscoring its dedication to maintaining a safe educational environment.
This case has highlighted ongoing concerns about sexual harassment in educational institutions across Nigeria and has triggered a broader discussion on the need for more stringent measures to protect students and ensure accountability for perpetrators.
The university's prompt response to the allegations reflects an increasing institutional awareness of the importance of addressing such serious issues decisively.
