Abuja, Nigeria – In a startling breach of security, more than 100 prisoners have escaped from the Suleja Prison located near Nigeria's capital, following severe structural damages caused by heavy rainfall.
Authorities reported that 118 inmates managed to flee the colonial-era facility, although 10 have been successfully recaptured as of now.
The incident occurred as intense rainstorms hit the region, marking the onset of the rainy season after a prolonged heatwave. T
he Suleja Prison, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Abuja, sustained significant damage due to the downpour, weakening its already aged structures, some of which date back to the colonial period.
In response to the escape, a vigorous manhunt has been initiated. "In conjunction with sister security agencies, we have so far recaptured 10 fleeing inmates and taken them into custody, while we are in hot pursuit to recapture the rest," stated a spokesperson from the Abuja prison authority.
While the specific identities of the fugitive prisoners remain undisclosed, concerns are growing that some could pose a serious threat to public safety.
However, reassurances have come from prison officials, urging the public to continue their daily activities without fear, as extensive efforts are underway to secure the area and apprehend the escapees.
This recent prison break is not an isolated incident in Nigeria's history of security challenges within its correctional facilities.
Just two years ago, over 400 prisoners escaped during an attack on another prison in Abuja, which resulted in casualties among inmates and security personnel. That attack was claimed by Islamist militants aiming to free fellow members.
Moreover, Nigeria's meteorological agency had issued warnings of potential heavy rains and flooding in several states, hinting at the likelihood of further infrastructural challenges.
Since 2020, Nigeria has witnessed the escape of more than 5,000 inmates due to various prison breaks, highlighting ongoing issues in the management and security of penal institutions.
The recurrence of such events stresses the urgent need for significant reforms in the correctional system, particularly in upgrading and maintaining prison infrastructures to prevent future incidents.
Authorities continue to track down the remaining escapees and have called for any information that could lead to their recapture, as they work diligently to reinforce security measures in the wake of this latest crisis.
