Lagos, Nigeria- Transgender social media influencer Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, widely known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted of spraying money—a practice where banknotes are thrown into the air, often at parties. Despite its popularity, this act is considered illegal under Nigerian law due to the potential disrespect it shows to the national currency, the naira.
Bobrisky, who has a following of five million on social media, pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her by Nigeria’s anti-graft agency following her arrest last earlier this month. The sentence handed down is the maximum allowed for the offense, with no option for a fine, although she has the right to appeal the decision.
The conviction has sparked widespread criticism, particularly due to concerns about selective law enforcement and the ongoing targeting of LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria, a country with strict laws against same-sex relations. Human rights lawyer Festus Ogun highlighted the issue, questioning why Bobrisky was specifically targeted by authorities for a practice that is commonly seen across various social gatherings in the nation.
During her trial, Bobrisky expressed regret and a lack of awareness about the legality of her actions. She requested a second chance to use her significant online platform to educate others about respecting the naira. "I am a social media influencer with 5 million followers … I wish I can be given a second chance to use my platform to educate my followers against the abuse of the naira," she told the court.
The presiding judge, Abimbola Awogboro, emphasized that the harsh sentence should serve as a deterrent to others who might disrespect the currency. "Enough of people mutilating and tampering with our currencies. It has to stop," the judge declared.
This case highlights the broader social and legal challenges faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria, reflecting the tension between traditional values and the rights of marginalized groups.
