MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE — The Mozambican government, in collaboration with authorities from Moscow, is investigating the mysterious death of Russian Ambassador Alexander Surikov, who was found deceased at his official residence in Maputo on Saturday night.
Local media reports confirmed the incident but the cause of Surikov's death remains unclear.
In response to rumors about the Russian authorities' alleged refusal to conduct an autopsy, the office of Mozambique’s public prosecutor clarified that it was not informed of any such decision.
This development adds to the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances of the ambassador's death.
President Filipe Nyusi expressed his condolences, noting that Surikov's passing leaves a "huge void" in the diplomatic community.
He praised the ambassador as a committed and exemplary diplomat. Surikov had served as the Russian ambassador to Mozambique since 2017, playing a significant role in fostering relations between the two countries.
