NAKURU, KENYA-In an alarming development, large fissures have appeared across the Rift Valley region of Kenya, specifically in Nakuru County, following recent bouts of heavy rainfall and widespread flooding.
The resulting cracks have devastated local communities, leading to significant loss of property and displacement of residents.
Areas such as Kiambogo, Kaptembwo, Ngata, and London are among the hardest hit, with numerous reports last week of homes sinking into the ground in Kiambogo while still occupied.
The severity of the situation has prompted the government to deploy a team of top geologists to the region to conduct urgent assessments.
The Rift Valley, a geologically weak zone extending from the Horn of Africa to Mozambique, is known for its volcanic ash-filled cracks. Authorities believe that the recent heavy rains have washed away this ash, causing the existing cracks to widen dangerously.
Elijah Mwangi, the Mining Principal Secretary, emphasized the risks associated with living in such a geologically sensitive area.
Speaking to Kenya's Daily Nation, Mwangi recalled previous warnings issued to the residents about the potential for earthquakes, sinkholes, and landslides.
He highlighted the 2018 incident where the Mai-Mahiu-Narok road near Suswa was dramatically split following a heavy downpour, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of the region.
As the community grapples with these disruptions, there are growing concerns about the immediate safety of the affected populations and the long-term implications for land stability in the Rift Valley.
The government's intervention aims to mitigate further damage and ensure the safety of Nakuru's residents, but the future remains uncertain as the region braces for more rain.
