In an unexpected move, the Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday to commemorate this year's Eid-el-Fitr, celebrating the end of Ramadan. This announcement was made in a statement signed by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, which was shared on the ministry’s X account earlier today.
This additional day extends the previously scheduled holidays for Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, aimed at allowing the Muslim community to mark the festive occasion. The extension comes in light of new developments regarding the sighting of the moon, which is used to determine the end of Ramadan. Saudi Arabian authorities reported on Monday that the crescent of Shawwal was not sighted, and hence the fasting would extend to Tuesday.
Eid-el-Fitr is set to be officially celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, signalling the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. The Federal Government’s decision to add another holiday reflects its acknowledgement of the significance of this festival to the Muslim Ummah across the nation.
In his statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated the Muslim community on successfully completing a month of fasting and spiritual rejuvenation. He also reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring a safe and prosperous environment for all Nigerians to thrive.
This declaration has been welcomed by community leaders and the general public, as it provides more time for families and friends to gather and celebrate together after a month dedicated to fasting, prayer, and reflection. The extended holiday is also expected to boost local commerce as festivities increase spending on food, clothing, and gifts.
The government's acknowledgement of the cultural and religious landscape of Nigeria underlines its dedication to fostering unity and respect among its diverse populace. As the nation prepares to celebrate, security measures and public safety preparations are being intensified to ensure that the festivities are conducted smoothly and securely.
