Kano, Nigeria-In a devastating incident early Wednesday morning, a local mosque in Gadan village, Kano State, became the scene of a horrific attack, resulting in at least eight worshippers dead and 16 others injured.
The assailant, a 38-year-old resident of the area, carried out the attack using a locally made explosive device, leading to a severe fire outbreak within the religious facility.
The police spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna, detailed that the motive behind this appalling act was rooted in "pure hostility following a prolonged family disagreement."
The suspect specifically targeted the mosque attendees over a bitter inheritance dispute, aiming to make his grievances heard in a tragically violent manner.
The local police chief, Umar Sanda, emphasized that the incident was not related to terrorism but rather a deeply personal vendetta. He reported that the suspect had invaded the mosque and detonated the homemade bomb, causing extensive damage to the building and harm to the worshippers inside.
Media coverage from the scene showed the mosque's charred walls and burned furniture, painting a grim picture of the aftermath.
The attack not only resulted in physical casualties but also sparked widespread panic across Kano, northern Nigeria's largest state, an area already sensitive to religion-related unrest.
Among the injured were four children, raising further concern about their well-being and the psychological impact on the youngest members of the community.
Eyewitness accounts from residents like Hussaini Adamu brought to light the chaos and desperation that unfolded, with children fleeing the burning building. Emergency response teams were quick to cordon off the area and transport the injured to a hospital in the state capital for urgent medical attention.
This tragic event underscores the potential for personal disputes to escalate into public tragedies, particularly in areas where tensions can quickly lead to violence.
As the community of Gadan village mourns the loss and grapples with the aftermath, there are calls for stronger measures to prevent such incidents and address the underlying issues that lead to such extreme acts of violence.
